Northern Cyprus is a beautiful place to visit and an even better place to live. Cyprus is approximately 3,572 square. miles making about the same size as the state of Connecticut in the United States. The norther part of Cyprus takes up about 3,355 square miles of that. Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus with a population is 197,200 but there are several other great cities such as Limassol, Farmagusta, Paphos, Morphou, Kyrenia and Larnaca. The population of Cyprus is approximately 1,048,000 people. Although the language spoken in Cyprus is mainly Greek and Turkish English is a common language and is widely spoken so the communication barrier is minimal. Northern Cyprus offers breath taking views of the oceans and the mountains.
The Northern Cyprus offers nearly 330 days annually of sunshine and beautiful weather. Rarely will you see rain or cloudy skis. With long hot summers and cool but wet winters it is a beautiful place to be. In the winter months you will find that the weather although still beautiful will cool considerably. You will still see the beautiful sunshine but you might need to grab a jacket and trade in your flip flops for tennis shoes. The winds that blows in off the water can be a bit chilly and you will even see a few rainy wet days. Don’t expect the rain to stay long as it never does. You will rarely see rain two days in a row. Usually it will rain, or pour actually and then the sun will come out and dry it all up. Grey skies and clouds do not stay long at the Mediterranean island. The climate in Northern Cyprus is generally hot, dry summers and cool wet winters making it a lovely place to be all year long.
The history that surrounds Cyprus is not only interesting but also fun to know if you plan on visiting or even moving to Northern Cyprus. The Treaty of Zurich was signed in 1960 giving Cyprus it’s independence while still protecting the rights of the Turkish Cypriot population that resided there. Britain, Greece and Turkey where the guarantors of this treaty but in 1963 the deterioration of the relationship between the Greek and Turkish communities became very apparent.
In July of 1974 Turkey sent their military in with peace keeping action, after consulting with Britain to protect the Turkish Cypriot communities. At this time the island continued to be divided with both the Greek and Turkish Cypriots both attempting to find a fair and reasonable solution to reunite the island but negotiations are always a slow but ongoing process and this situation was no different. In November of 1983 the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was deemed to be a fully independent territory of the Republic of Cyprus in the south.
