There are several great sites to see while you are in Northern Cyprus on a holiday or if you have chosen to make this beautiful Mediterranean island your home. Northern Cyprus is a land filled with medieval castles dating back hundreds of years, abbeys and monuments that offer both young and old something to see and do.
The Buffavento Castle is a must see for anyone who fancies see and beautiful castle. This castle sits on the Kyrenia range and was meant to be part of three castles that were put there as a line of defence against the Arab attacks. This castle is nicknames the “Lion Castle” since during the period of 1192 and 1489 the castle was used as a prison.
The Folk Art Museum is another must see for people of all ages. The museum is house in an 18th century home on the Kyrenia harbor. Coming in on the ground floor you will see a primitive plow, olive presses, a loom, a frail and jugs of all sizes and shapes. Going up to the top floor you will find samples of traditional hand crafted items such as bed linens, wool socks, wood carvings, wedding dresses and crochet. There are several interesting things on display that would show the rich culture of the Northern Cyprus.
In Famagusta you will find the Twin Churches. The twin churches are two identical churches built side by side. The larger of the two churches was completed in the 14th century. This church belonged to the Knights of Templars. The order ended in 1313 when the very last grand master and the other leaders where burned and killed as heretics. The church was then given back to the Knights Hospitalers who also owned the adjoining church. The churches have since been restored and is now being used for the Cyprus art Society.
