You can reach Northern Cyprus by plane or by car. If you choose to drive you will find that many car ferries that operate from Famagusta and Mersin, Turkey. You will also find ferries that go between Kyrenia and Tasucu, Turkey. If you’re in London and want to make a quick trip to Cyprus you can do it in four short days.
If you choose to fly you have to touch down in Turkey since the only direct air links to Northern Cyprus fly out of Turkey. There are several cities from which you can depart from such as Izmir, Ankara, Istanbul and plenty of others. There are two airlines that fly to Ercan Airport in Northern Cyprus and they are Cyprus Turkish Airlines and Turkish Airlines.
There are a few ways of getting around Northern Cyprus but these ways are of course limited in their availability and the areas they will visit. There is no public transportation to speak of but there are other ways.
A car for hire is basically the same thing as renting a vehicle from a company. To be able to hire a car in Northern Cyprus you must have a valid drivers license from your home country and be at least 25 years of age. The condition of cars that are for hire is usually not very good and usually will leave you wanting something else, but once you are on the road feeling the wind in your hair many of those desires will fade away. Always ask to test drive the car before you pay for it and of course make sure to check things such as brakes, headlights and anything else that is a must on a car. Cars that are for hire have a different, rather distinctive red licenses plate that is red in color and the numbers/letter always begin with a “Z”. Please note you are not allowed to drive the car over the green line in any directions for any reason what so ever.
Buses are quite unavailable. There is no public bus service from the Ercan airport so your best mode of transpiration will be a taxi from this location. If you are staying at one of the larger hotels in Northern Cyprus as if they have a shuttle service or if anyone will be meeting you at the airport. Many times large hotels will provide this service for their guest. You can however catch a bus back to the airport from the airlines office in town. Please make sure to note that the buses leave the station two hours before the airplane is to leave so plan accordingly. In the central and suburbs of Nicosia city you will find buses that will run between all of the main towns but these buses are much lease frequent after 5pm and of course also on weekends.
Taxis are easily accessible in the major cities of the Northern Cyprus but be aware that these taxis do not have meters. You should always ask the driver to tell you amount he will charge for the trip you need to make before getting in the taxi. Educate yourself on the average taxi fare to be safe when committing to a taxi fare.
When obtaining residency in Northern Cyprus there are many different things that need to be done and procedures that need to be followed. If you do not follow the laws and guidelines then there are fines that will be issued to you. These fines can add up quickly so it is suggested that you know what your doing or at least learn to ask questions about what you need to next.
